The Gospel of Judas Today

CEU - Faculty Tower, #409

Lecturer(s):
Boudewijn Dehandschutter

Institute:
Catholic University of Leuven

The publication of the Gospel of Judas at Easter in 2006 made a splash in scholarship. Departing from today’s scholarly situation in the study of the text, this talk comments on the meaning of its title and its Gnostic Sethian context. Who is the person of Judas and what is his role in Gnostic salvation history? Is this text part of a Gnostic insider’s polemic about the meaning of Christ’s Passion? Or rather a discussion about Judas’ role in the context of early Christian diversity?

Boudewijn Dehandschutter studied Classical, biblical, and oriental Christian languages and history (MA 1969) and theology (STD 1977). He is Emeritus Professor of Greek Patristics and early Christian history at the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium).
