Medieval Monastic Reforms and the Transformation of the European Landscape

Faculty Tower, Room #409

Lecturer(s):
Jozsef Laszlovszky

Institute:
CEU, Medieval Studies Department, Budapest

Monastic reform movements of the eleventh and twelfth centuries re-shaped the spiritual image of medieval monasticism. Some of the new monastic orders, particularly the Cistercian and the Carthusian, also contributed to the transformation of the different landscapes in the area of Western Christianity. Recent historical and landscape archeological research demonstrated different characteristic elements of this transformation process and the lecture will present some case studies for the new methodological approaches of these studies.
