Michael Grünbart

Michael Grünbart is currently the director of the library of the Institute of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Vienna, Austria. He studied Byzantine literature and history, classical philology and numismatics at the University of Vienna (1988-1992). Apart from his PhD thesis turned to a monograph (Formen der Anrede im byzantinischen Brief vom 6. bis zum 12. Jahrhundert, Vienna 2005), his major publications include: Epistularum Byzantinarum Initia, Hildesheim-Zürich-New York 2001 and L' épistolographie et la poésie épigrammatique: projets actuels et questions de méthodologie, Paris 2003 (co-edited with W. Hörandner). He has taught at the University of Vienna and has collaborated with major journals of a Byzantine interest. Apart from epistolography, he has dealt with questions of material culture and daily life, as well as the image of Byzantine aristocracy from the 11th through the 13th centuries.
